    Description

State of New York Stock.  (We would call it a Bond today;)  Issued the 19th Feby, 1839 for ,000 and sold to Josef Antonio de  Agrida of Madrid.  The state could call it after 1845 and apparently did Feby 17th, 1845.  Most Americans don't know that much of the development in the United States was financed by Europeans who were attracted to the 5% interest rate which was higher than most issuers in Europe.  This was sold to me as being issued to pay for the Erie Canal or its second remodeling.  There is no mention of the Erie Canal on this document but in those days states usually only issued bonds for capital improvements and not for financing current operations.  Most capital improvements in 1939 were for the Erie Canal and its various branches.  7 3/4 b 9 3/4 inches  Nice condition.
